Did you know that plastic has been found in more than 60% of all seabirds and in 100% of different sea turtle species? According to this article last year from OceanConservancy.org, 8 million metric tons of plastic goes into our oceans every year, causing the creatures who call these waters home to mistake our trash for food. 😨

If you don’t have it marked on your calendar, make sure to put a big star next to Saturday, April 21st, a.k.a Earth Day: the annual reminder to recycle, conserve energy, preserve our trees, and to keep our planet looking and feeling its best. 😀

Since we love the outdoors at Mountain House and enjoy everything our beautiful earth has to offer, we found some fun activities you can do to help educate your little earthlings about keeping our water, trees, and air out of harm's way. 🌳

Check them out below!

Oil Spill Activity
Create a replica of our oceans in a large container with water, rocks, and “sea creatures,” and show your kids the effects of oil pollution with this fun experiment! 🐳 EXAMPLE

Milk Carton Bird Feeder
Show some love to the birds in your backyard this Earth Day by taking an old milk carton and turning it into a beautiful bird feeder. This will teach your kids the value of turning recycled goods into reusable treasures. 🐥 EXAMPLE

To Recycle or Not to Recycle…
This activity is an easy way to educate your little ones on what items should be recycled and what can be thrown away.  All you need are a few magazines, scissors, and glue to make some cool flashcards!EXAMPLE

Polluting Fish Activity
Cut a sponge into the shape of a fish, gather your different pollutants, and see what happens when Freddie the Fish is exposed to harsh chemicals as he explores the waters around him. 🐟 EXAMPLE

Creative Ways to Plant a Tree
From egg cartons to mason jars, recycling plastic and glass items can be an incredible way to create new life! 🌿EXAMPLE

Make Your Own Paper
Did you know you can make your own paper without the help of a tree? It’s true! Whatever wasted paper scraps you have, you can blend and mash together to make a new piece of parchment. This might get messy, so aprons are advised! 📝EXAMPLE

Celebrate with Dirt Cups!
After a successful afternoon of Earth Day fun, enjoy a dirt cup full of gummy worms and Oreo crumbs. Don’t forget to recycle the plastic cups! 🐛EXAMPLE

Let’s continue to find fun ways to protect and preserve our amazing planet! 💙🌍💚
