Not Your Average Spring Break

Spring break is almost here for all of the schools here at Mountain House, and like many families that are foregoing travel this year, you’re probably searching for some activities to keep the kids entertained and boredom at bay. Here are our top ten spring break staycation ideas for in and around Mountain House, so have a read, plan your weeklong itinerary, and get ready to make some great memories!

Connect with Nature

Hit the trails in Mountain House or a nearby state or regional park for some exercise, sunshine, and fresh air in wide-open spaces. Check out Bethany Reservoir State Recreation Area or Mt. Diablo State Park.

Screen-Free Day(s)

Designate a day or more where everyone ditches the devices (Mom and Dad included!) and enjoy a day out or at home screen free. If you’re staying in, a family paint, craft, or board game day is a great way for everyone to talk, laugh, and reconnect.

Library or Bookstore Day

Spring break wouldn’t be the same without some time with a good book. Treat the kids to a book of their choice at a local bookstore. If there’s a cafe inside, enjoy some reading time together over a tasty treat or two. Or stay super local and spend an afternoon at the Mountain House Library and let the kids check out as many titles as they like.

Backyard Camping

Have a day and night of camping fun without any of the hassle! Pitch tents in the backyard, hang up some string lights for ambiance, and enlist your fire pit or grill to roast hot dogs and s’mores. Tell ghost or silly stories, play games, identify constellations, and make some memories.

Day in the City

Take BART into the city and have a fun day being ‘tourists.’ Ride a cable car, roam the Exploratorium, picnic at Golden Gate Park, and top it off with sundaes at Ghirardelli Square. Check out a kid-friendly San Francisco itinerary HERE.

Park Hop

Create a park hop passport (free printable HERE) for Mountain House. Pack a lunch or some snacks and visit every park in the community in a single day. Mark each park visited with a sticker, and after the kids have filled their passports award them with a trip to your favorite froyo bar or ice cream shop.

Water Day

Spend one of the warmer afternoons at our community splash pad, or splurge for day passes at a local water park like Hurricane Harbor or Aqua Adventure.

Day of Service

Use spring break as an opportunity to give back to the community. It’s never too early to get the kids involved in service projects and lending a helping hand. Websites like volunteermatch.org or justserve.org can match you and your family with community service projects based on your location, interests, and age-appropriateness.

Family Bike Ride

Enjoy a morning or afternoon bike cruise around the neighborhood. Pack a picnic lunch and enjoy a rest stop and play time at your favorite Mountain House park.

Plan a Neighborhood Block Party

Get the neighbors involved and throw an impromptu block party! Chances are they’re looking for something fun to do, too! Have everyone bring a dish to enjoy, bust out your party playlist, and have a blast with an afternoon full of food, water play, and games.

There you have it, ingredients for a fantastic spring break staycation full of plenty opportunities for fun and to make memories!
